Welcome to Mrs. Hilliard's Classroom

Welcome to a new school year! My name is Mrs. Hilliard, and I am excited to be your child’s teacher. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and am passionate about creating a classroom where all students feel safe, respected, and valued.

My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that all students can learn and succeed when they feel supported and connected. I strive to create a culturally responsive classroom that celebrates diversity, encourages curiosity, and promotes collaboration. I am truly looking forward to partnering with you this year to support your child’s academic growth and social-emotional development.

Classroom Expectations:

In our classroom, we follow three core expectations:

  • Be Respectful – Treat classmates, teachers, and materials with kindness.

  • Be Responsible – Come prepared, follow directions, and take ownership of learning.

  • Be Ready to Learn – Participate actively and give your best effort.

These expectations help create a positive learning environment where students feel safe to take risks, ask questions, and grow both academically and socially. Clear expectations support consistency, accountability, and mutual respect.

Communication Plan:

Strong communication between school and home is essential. Families can expect consistent and two-way communication through the following methods:

  • Weekly Classroom Newsletter (Email/Website Post):
    Sent every Friday with updates on learning goals, upcoming events, and important reminders.

  • Class Communication App (ClassDojo or Remind):
    Used for quick messages, announcements, photos, and individual communication as needed.

  • Conferences & Phone Calls:
    Scheduled conferences twice a year, with additional meetings or phone calls available upon request.

Consistent communication builds trust, keeps families informed, and creates a safe, supportive learning environment where questions and collaboration are encouraged.

Building Relationships with Families:

I believe families are essential partners in education. To build strong relationships, I will:

  • Learn about each family’s cultural background, values, and goals for their child.

  • Provide opportunities for families to share concerns, feedback, and ideas.

  • Communicate with empathy, respect, and openness.

  • Honor families’ languages and experiences by offering flexible communication options.

When families and teachers work together, students benefit from consistent support, increased confidence, and a stronger sense of belonging.

Volunteer & Family Engagement Opportunities:

Families are welcome to participate in ways that fit their schedules and comfort levels. Opportunities include:

  1. At-Home Support: Helping with reading, projects, or skill practice at home.

  2. Virtual Participation: Joining virtual events, meetings, or classroom celebrations.

  3. Classroom Support: Assisting with activities, reading groups, or special projects (when available).

  4. Cultural Sharing: Sharing family traditions, stories, or experiences with the class.

  5. School Events & Committees: Participating in family nights, advisory groups, or school-wide events.

All forms of involvement are valued, and families are encouraged to participate in ways that work best for them.
